Athens, Greece Camera

March 5, 2008

The sun is just about to rise over the city if Athens, that ancient city of light. This camera is another major reference point in the European path of the sunrise.

This is a great location for watching the play of light against dramatic cloud formations. The double wide panoramic shot is stitched together from two live views. Impressive.

This happens to be another outpost for spotting the sun in Europe. Once I see the sky lighten just a bit in Frankfort, its time to start prowling the continent for webcams to watch.

Waited until the right moment to capture an early morning in Frankfurt. There are five cameras to watch, but this view of the skyline seems to be the best. This location is used more as a reference to know when to prepare for the sunrise along the coast of Italy and Africa.

Reference point for sunrise watching in Europe. The view from this camera is almost always breathtaking. Something about this city fascinates the viewer.

Even though the refresh rate for this camera is 15 minutes, still it is such an inspiring view and a great position to watch the weather. When the above page opens, click the image for the larger panoramic view.

Novosibirsk is city that prides itself on size: it is the third-largest city in Russia (the biggest city east of the Urals), has the biggest railway station along the trans-Siberian route, the biggest library in Siberia, and the biggest opera/ballet theater in all of Russia — even bigger than Moscow’s Bolshoy.

In 1943, the Academy of Sciences opened up its Siberian branch in Novosibirsk, which signaled the beginning of the city’s transformation into the educational hub of Siberian Russia. While many research institutes are located within Novosibirsk itself, still many more are clustered in Academgorodok, a small city founded in the 1950’s by the Academy, 30 km south of Novosibirsk. At its height, Academgorodok was home to 65,000 scientists and their families, and was a priviliged area to live in for the academic elite. Gorbachev’s perestroika was initially conceived here, by economists who where then relocated to Moscow to author the economic revolution.

Two streaming cameras, one in the town, and another on a main highway. User controls the refresh rate. The difference in weather from summer to winter is dramatic to say the least.
